Trying to figure out how to start mining bitcoin with some excess servers, that I cannot get a decent offer on or approval to get rid of them. Aston drifts for your time.

Ok, can someone explain to me what the hell Bitcoin is? I've heard of it and seen it before plenty of times but I'm not actually entirely certain how it works and what it is other than some form of Internet currency or something...

I just retired 3 beefy esx hosts. I had the same idea.

It is supposedly anonymous currency of which the purchases it has been used for cannot be tracked. (Although, mush has changed since it became so popular on the Silk Road)

How many have you got? I think you need banks and banks of processors to get anything meaningful.

But Bitcoin transactions get handled over the internet, right? (That was my understanding, which might be wrong?)
It surely could be traceable somehow...

At this point, you’ll spend more on electricity than you’ll get from mining.

The SilkRoad guy got caught because he was an idiot, not because they were able to trace his bitcoin transactions.

I have 1 really high powered host and then 4 other dual cpu retired servers that could be used.

He got “caught” because he was a figurehead, and we all know how much American loves to hate figureheads.

Unless you’re going to use dedicated FPGAs or ASICs, don’t even waste your time. CPU mining is worthless and even GPU has pretty much reached EOL. Whoever still actually uses and/or mines those bitcoins does so with dedicated ASICs and FPGAs that do nothing but crack the hashing algorithm that Bitcoin uses.

Yeah, but as far as the mechanics of getting caught, it was because he had his private email address listed on a forum that The Man was able to trace back to him.

Prosecuting the “creator” of the silk road was nothing more than an arbitrary use of the vast police and cyberwarfare network in order to persecute a so-called enemy of the state.
